Kernel panic when booting from installation USB - Bobthegoldfish - 03-17-2012

I have just downloaded the Generic 1.0.2 release and ran the (linux) installer on an 8Gb USB stick.

When I put the stick into a PC and try to boot from it, it gets to a line of text saying Syslinux Debian something and a prompt that says boot:

If I hit enter, it starts loading the KERNEL, then a line of dots and then 'ready'. Shortly after it says ready, a number of lines come up, starting with:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
The PC then freezes and can only be powered off/restarted.

Things I have tried:
Another USB stick
A different PC
The most recent devel version
Changing the install script to use the -s switch when installing syslinux
Completely wiping the USB stick and applying a new partition table to it.

Is anyone able to see what might be going wrong?

Just tried 1.95.1 and it does the same thing.
Tried OpenELEC-Generic.i386-devel-20120402145732-r10416, still the same.

till the same with the last nightly build..

Do you need more information for the investigation ?

Re: Kernel panic when booting from installation USB - ssebo - 04-09-2012

Hi,

same here on an Ultra already some releases ago problems started in march.

After updating the Ultra (on internal harddrive) I had randomly kernel panics on boot (showing failure with the ir device on irq3)

Sometimes the boot went fine...so not really pointing somewhere.

New install with usb stick and releases from dev had the same problem. Also with the new 1.95 beta.

New install with v1.0.2 instead is fine.

So atm I have to stick with the "old" version and have no benefits from the new releases.

Please post a clear pic of the panic on-screen to an image sharing site and share the URL pls. Otherwise you're just saying "+1" which has zero value in helping us understand what the issue might be!

Me the same with an xtreamer Ultra (last nightly build), installation on HDD drive.

the only thing that i added on my xtreamer Ultra is a Logitech Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800 with a nano unifiyng usb (It worked with the previous openelec version. I tried without this receptor but same result Kernel panic)

Same issue since february (and a lot of nighlty build)

Yeah,

that is exactly same problem I tried to explain...it's showing failure on the internal ir device on irq3 (what I believe...)

Thanks for looking into this.');
