Very strange OE errors that some folders on hdd are not accessible - LennyX - 09-16-2012

Using a git copy of OE (Version: devel-20120915142813-r11930). Setup is /dev/sda (SSD) as system drive and /dev/sdb (conventional hdd) for all multimedia storage.

Concerning /dev/sdb:

In /var/log I get the following error:
Code:
Sep 16 06:44:09 openelec user.err vdr: [1463] ERROR (tools.c,346): /var/media/c1d3c5c5-ea7b-4639-9e20-0586aef655bc/recordings: No such file or directory
(repeated very often in /var/log) This is the drawer for my VDR recordings. It's on the internal hdd and is very well accessible - even when navigating to VDR's recordings with the GUI itself. So where's the problem?
Or this:
Code:
06:44:09 T:140392464897792 ERROR: GetDirectory - Error getting /var/media/c1d3c5c5-ea7b-4639-9e20-0586aef655bc/Dokus/
This one is from XBMC.log. It is one of my video directories. All other video directories don't give complaints. However, also in this case, I very well can access the videos in this drawer with OE. It's always this folder that gives the error.

Maybe related: I have the problem that the internal hdd which contains (among others) these folders. It is always detected anew on starting OE (this thread).

Concerning /dev/sda:
While this drive is working flawlessly, it also shows some strange messages in /var/log. Maybe it is related:
Code:
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.err kernel: [ 4.130534] EXT4-fs (sda1): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.err kernel: [ 4.170447] EXT4-fs (sda1): couldn't mount as ext2 due to feature incompatibilities
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.info kernel: [ 4.208695] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.err kernel: [ 4.967044] EXT4-fs (sda2): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.err kernel: [ 5.003718] EXT4-fs (sda2): couldn't mount as ext2 due to feature incompatibilities
Sep 16 08:44:05 openelec user.info kernel: [ 5.045743] EXT4-fs (sda2): recovery complete

The "feature incompatibilities" errors can be ignored, the kernel tries to mount /dev/sda1 as ext2 first, which fails as it's ext4, then ext3 which fails as it's ext4, then ext4 which succeeds; same for /dev/sda2. You'll see exactly the same on most Linux distros.

No idea on the rest of it Smile

Hmmmm.

I have a possible solution. From the time stamps of the above given log snipplets, it seems that the hdd is not ready at this time. Only a second later /var/log shows:

Code:
Sep 16 06:44:10 openelec user.info kernel: [ 11.158898] EXT4-fs (sdb1): recovery complete
Sep 16 06:44:10 openelec user.info kernel: [ 11.159076] EXT4-fs (sdb1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
Sep 16 06:44:10 openelec user.err vdr: [1585] VDR version 1.7.27 started

Then vdr stops spamming the logfile with its complaints.

The hdd makes quite some noise when starting up. Maybe it is still spinning up? As OE offers no S.M.A.R.T., I cannot find out if there's something wrong with it (fsck is fine).

Maybe that's the reason why OE offers me the hdd to browse: It takes so long to spin up that it's getting only online when OE is already running.
