Working: Not a new build but new to OpenElec - AMD Fusion - PXE boot - TomB19 - 10-01-2012

I've been running XBMCbuntu for a while but I'm pretty new to OpenElec. It's working and I'm delighted with it as I couldn't save the config on XBMCbuntu nor could I use NFS. Now both are working. Everything is working.

The original system:

MSI E350IS-E45 AMD E-350 APU
Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
EVGA 01G-P3-1430-LR GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit
Rii remote (the newer one with the small receiver)

This system worked great with MiniMyth. I was a MiniMyth guy for years. Loved it. I left the MythTV world because I don't need a back end and it takes too long to refresh the entire video catalog to pick up a new item or two. I wanted something with direct access to files. That turned out to be XBMC.

I love the XBMC interface. You guys are rock stars. Thank you for that.

... but my trip down OpenElec lane was a bumpy one, to say the least. Getting everything working was tough but I perservered and now I have some hard earned experience to offer others. I suspect it would have been way easier with a flash based system but I'm a PXE boot die hard.

I ended up pulling the GeForce video card and returning to the Fusion graphics. I could never do that with MiniMyth because of the state of ATI drivers on Linux. This is the first I've ever had hardware video accelleration on Linux with ATI video. To be fair, the nVidia video has been working like a champ for years so no need to leave it but it adds cost and heat.

The current system:

MSI E350IS-E45 AMD E-350 APU
Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
OpenELEC-Fusion.x86_64-1.95.7

My server runs Ubuntu Server 12.04.1. It is also running a Fusion system (1 x ASUS E45M1-M PRO AMD E-450 / 8GB RAM / ZFS with 24TB of storage) and was just as problematic to set up. Network is plain old gigabit ethernet over copper.

When I got XBMCbuntu PXEbooting, I tried to add some documentation to the XBMC wiki but could never get the wiki to work. Frustrated, I just walked away. I know you guys are XBMC guys so I apologize for that and will be happy to add the info there too but I could use a hand.

There's nothing much to say about the system beyond everything working perfectly. It's in a nice Silverstone GD05 case which looks great below my Denon 3605 and it's connected to an LG 50" plasma. Speakers are home built units of Dennis Murphy design (MB-01). The overall effect is sensational. Everybody loves it.

Here's a pic.

I will add that I love PXEboot because, combined with a Fusion system, I can build an extremely thin client with extreme low power use and heat dissipation.

Also, I set it up with a PXE boot menu so I could select various versions of OpenElec while debugging. If one version doesn't work, I can just reboot and try another version off another menu entry. That way, I can batch up a bunch of tests at once. Also, it allows me to present a menu to any new system that comes online as a default pxelinux.cfg.

Here is the configuration in pxelinux.cfg/AC100147. I turn the system on and it boots directly into OpenElec. That's all I want on my livingroom system.

Code:
# myth1 - livingroom system
# IP address = 172.16.1.71 ; This file will only be targeted by this system due to the filename being the hex notation for this IP address

DEFAULT OpenElec.tv
PROMPT 0

LABEL OpenElec.tv

Re: Working: Not a new build but new to OpenElec - AMD Fusion - PXE boot - TomB19 - 10-01-2012

Here is the configuration in pxelinux.cfg/default. I have three other front ends that I need to feed. Two of them will get a single menu, like the livingroom system, but one of them is a CNC controller in my shop (linuxCNC) so it needs to have the option to boot to linuxCNC or OpenElec. I might build my own install that can run both XBMC and linuxCNC. I don't know how well XBMC will do with a real time kernel. If it doesn't work, I'll just stick to the menu system.

Code:
# generic PXE boot menu

DEFAULT menu.c32
PROMPT 0

# Menu Configuration

The original image has that basket in the way of the media box. I'll try to get a better picture but there isn't much to see. It's just a black Silverstone GD05.

Hi,

what are your temps @ idle and @ streaming a e.g. HD DVD over LAN etc.?

br,
Chris

Re: Working: Not a new build but new to OpenElec - AMD Fusion - PXE boot - TomB19 - 12-04-2012

I've never paid much attention, other than to reassure myself it isn't damaging itself. Here are the results from last night.

Idle:

CPU - 42C (had been idle for 10 minutes)
GPU - 42C
CPU usage - approx 6.5%

Streaming 1080p content:

CPU - 41C (had been streaming for over 60 minutes)
GPU - 42C
CPU usage - approx 22%');

Thanks for your reply!

Ok, that are temperatures I only could dream about on my Asus E45M1-I Deluxe where idle (OpenELEC 2.0.0 and 2.9x) are constantly over 55-60C..

Do you have additional case fan or only the one on the CPU heat sink?

br,
Chris
