Annoying video pauses on i3 with Intel build 3.02 - Halfwalker - 05-12-2013

The basic problem is that video pauses for about 1/2 second every couple of minutes or so. Audio continues fine, and when video resumes, it speeds up to catch up, and then is fine for another few minutes. The setup looks like this :

ASRock H55M motherboard, i3 540 cpu and 4g ram
OpenElec 3.02 - says 12.2 Frodo on bootup.
System info shows 12.2 git:32b1a5e May 2 2013.

The OpenElec system is booting via PXE to iPXE to boot via iSCSI from a main server downstairs, so it has no local disk at all. That server is an AMD 8350 8-core 4.0ghz with 16g ram, running Ubuntu 12.04. Connectivity is all wired via gigE, and using the current Samba 2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2.6 on the server for the shares.

The pausing issue happens with just about any video - HD 720p or 1080p, or even older 480i DVD rips. VAAPI is enabled, and hitting "o" to show stats up top only shows the 4 cores hitting 3%-8% at any given time. Occasionally one core will shoot to 12% or something, but only for one refresh cycle. A point of interest, the stats display is a little garbled, it looks like two lines are overwriting each other - you can see that in the screenshot below.

What other information can I debug or log to help figure out what's going on here ? I used to run the regular xbmc nightly, building it maybe once a month or so. While not as "pretty" and slick as OpenElec, it never exhibited the video pausing like this. I'm going to scrounge up a spare drive, put OpenElec on it to see if a local install is any different, but I'm not holding much hope. I've been watching the traffic with wireshark, and nothing has jumped out yet ...

D.

Disable VAAPI and see if that makes a difference. I noted on 3.0.1 on both an i3 530 and an i3 661 that when VAAPI was enabled there would be a frame stutter quite often. Turning VAAPI off and relying on the processor to do the "heavy lifting" removed this. There seems to be some correlation between the latest Intel drivers.

Both installations are local, the 530 on a 7200rpm SATAII and the 661 on a SATA III SSD.

Thanks, I'll give that a try later tonight. Crap, the whole point of VAAPI is offloading ...

you might try a bios update on the board.

Yes I know, annoying isn't it.

I should also check for BIOS updates for my other board as well and see if there is anything. Good idea!

Good call on the bios update - will be checking that out later today.

Last night turned off VAAPI and played Thor and Captain America, both 1080p with high bitrate. No pauses. Didn't have keyboard attached so couldn't see cpu utilization, will check that out again tonight. Will turn VAAPI on and off for a single movie to make sure that's the issue.

And if it IS the issue, what's the fix ? Not using VAAPI will drive the cpu utils up, and the attendant heat generated. My htpc is a fanless heatpipe one, and definitely need to keep heat down.
