AppleTV - Choppy 1080p post 3.2.1 Upgrade - sharkus - 10-02-2013

Hello,
I have a CrystalHD install on my 1st Gen AppleTV, and it's been working fine with my 1080p files. However, since upgrading to v3.2.1, I've noticed VERY choppy performance, almost as if the CrystalHD isn't operating properly. I know that when opening a 1080p file it may take 20 - 30 seconds for things to display fluidly, but even after 3 minutes, things are not running properly, the audio sometimes plays all the time, the video is static.

I've ssh'd in and run the following commands (this is with a cold boot and no media playing) and here are the results, which I think means the card is installed and detected

OpenELEC:~ # lspci | grep Crystal
02:00.0 Multimedia controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM70015 Video Decoder [Crystal HD]
OpenELEC:~ # dmesg | grep -i crystal
[ 3.303662] Loading crystalhd v3.10.0
[ 3.303697] crystalhd 0000:02:00.0: Starting Device:0x1615
[ 3.303712] crystalhd 0000:02:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 3.330048] crystalhd 0000:02:00.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 14.486338] crystalhd 0000:02:00.0: Opening new user[0] handle
[ 15.336336] crystalhd 0000:02:00.0: Closing user[0] handle via ioctl with mode 417a00

Does that look ok? Can someone provide me with what the next steps would be in trying to debug this problem?

I have the same problem. even for 720p videos.. I had to turn off CrystalHD support in OE to watch most of my video.

I'm having the same issue. I just bought the CrystalHD '15 and after installing it all plays like the thing is not working at all. All my 720p content plays like crap, were as before it used to play flawlessly. I was running 3.2.4. I upgraded to the latest alpha of 4 and I get the same issues.

I downgraded to 3.0.0 and the issues are not there. It is definitely a problem with the new versions of openelec or XBMC. Is there any way I can provide info so you guys can maybe fix and extend the life of the ATV1 for a few more years?

Is anyone actually using a crystalHD card on a 3.2.4 installation with no problems?

So you don't get the lag before movie playback like the rest of us with ATV1+CrystalHD BCM97xx15 on 3.2.4?

AppleTV - Choppy 1080p post 3.2.1 Upgrade - druu - 04-23-2014

UPDATE: I managed to get things much snappier by changing Settings > Video > Playback > Render Method from Autodetect to Advanced Shaders (GLSL). Very minimal lag now when playing back HD content whether streaming from LAN or WAN.

So it seems that the Autodetect option is causing the ATV to chug. It would be good to hear from others to see if this also speeds things up for them!

Yea I spent about 6 hours on both of the apple tv's trying to set that, couldn't get it to be anything but c8. I might just spring for the bcm70015 since it would only take a second to swap out. Are there specific kexts for the bcm70015 vs the bcm70012?
