Audio Set Up on 3.2.4 Fusion build - noromamai - 03-18-2014

I am trying to set up audio so I can use "Zone2" on my receiver, but can't get it right. I am using an Asrock E350M1/USB3 mobo and running the 3.2.4 Fusion build.

Detected audio devices are:
HD-AUDIO GENERIC, @@@
HDA ATI SB ALC892, DIGITAL S/PDIF
HDA ATI SB ALC892, ANALOG

Available Passthrough devices:
HD-AUDIO GENERIC, @@@
HDA ATI SB ALC892, DIGITAL S/PDIF

First of all, it seems optical is not working correctly.

When HD-AUDIO is set as "audio output device" and "audio output" is set to HDMI, i get sound ok when playing music and movies while the receiver is set to HDMI. I have optical set as audio passthrough device and connected to "AV1" on the receiver. When setting the input to AV1 on the receiver i hear nothing.
When "audio output device" is set to OPTICAL and "audio output" is set to OPTICAL/COAX and i set the receiver to AV1, i hear sound for less than a second and then nothing.

What i want to achieve is having main sound over HDMI and a secondary channel of sound either going over optical or analog to the receiver. optical (via a digital to analog converter (optical in, 2x rca out)) or analog connected to the receiver on an analog input (because zone2 on the receiver on can only accept analog inputs). This way openelec can also be used (headless via yatse android app) to listen to music in the main zone and zone2.

in the older OE it was possible to edit asound.conf and get this done. but after searching a lot it seems this doesn't work with the new audio engine.

i have seen posts from people who say they have dual audio without doing anything with the new audio engine. i am having a harder time it seems.

is there anyone out there with the same mobo and has optical output working? maybe it's an incompatability and i may be wasting a lot of time trying to get something working that just won't.

when i connect the optical to the digital-to-analog converter all i get from the rca jacks is static.

any help here would be appreciated. i hope i am overlooking something simple and can get this all just working soon.
