NForce4 CK804: SPDIF passthrough not working - apa - 09-29-2014

Yes: this is yet another "CK804 SPDIF passthrough not working topic"...

The relevant parts of my HTPC are as follows:
  • CPU: Athlon64 X2 3800+
  • Motherboard: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard (BIOS 1805) NForce4 with CK804 sound (relying on a Realtek ALC850 chip)
  • RAM: 2x 512 MB DDR-400
  • GPU: nVidia Geforce GT240
  • Receiver: Marantz SR7500 (supporting both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS decoding), connected to motherboard's SPDIF TOSLINK port (optical) + JBL 5.1 speaker-set
  • OpenElec 4.2.0

I am new to OpenElec, but have been using XBMC/Win7 on the very same HTPC for a few years now without issues (so I know for sure that the hardware does work).

At first, I had no sound at all. After some tinkering, I got the 2-channel PCM mode working using a custom asound.state (see further down for the asound.state I used along with a screenshot of my XBMC audio settings) and some specific audio settings in XBMC.

With these settings, I have audio everywhere but only two-channel: with the settings I use, this is to be expected: SPDIF can only support 2 PCM-channels. Unfortunately, this just doesn't cut it: I need passthrough to work for DD 5.1 and DTS.

I tested many different combinations of settings in XBMC, but none worked reliably. To my own amazement, I have been able to get passthrough to work a few isolated times in one specific movie after having repeatedly checked/unchecked the passthrough option while the movie was playing (see settings in attached "PassthroughNotWorking.png").

I have read numerous threads related to SPDIF passthrough on this same chipset but nothing really worked. Many threads report that audio does work in XBMCBuntu, but that is not the case for me (tested with XBMCBuntu live on Gotham 13.0). In XBMCBuntu, I checked alsamixer and saw that SPDIF was not muted (everything seemed ok there).

I have also read that there had been issues with the timer on NForce4 motherboards (acpi_use_timer_override), but that this would have been fixed with BIOS 1805. I originally installed OpenElec with BIOS 1016 and subsequently flashed the BIOS: no change (still no SPDIF passthrough). I am wondering whether this timer issue might have something to do with all this?!

Can anyone help me investigate this further?

xbmc.log that resulted after I applied the audio settings as in the attached "PassthroughNotWorking.png", rebooted and played the movie 300 (which is the movie that sometimes worked in passthrough mode).

"PassthroughNotWorking.png" is a screenshot of the audio settings that should give me passthrough but don't.
"2ChannelWorking.png" is a screenshot of the audio settings that produce 2-channel audio.

NForce4 CK804: SPDIF passthrough not working - chewitt - 09-30-2014

If you want to output all audio via SPDIF to the SR7500 you will need to configure it as both the normal and passthrough device - that's what I have with my equally aged (but great) SR5400. These days XBMC auto-discovers audio hardware so asound.conf files should not be required - remove it. The only problem we see with some users (and mostly SPDIF users) is that OpenELEC boots extremely fast and XBMC can be started before the kernel has finished configuring audio devices; the result is you don't get all devices available in XBMC and either there is no SPDIF or if the timing is right on the edge of things; sometimes SPDIF is okay, next boot not okay etc. and you have the appearance of an intermittent fault. It's worth using the OE configuration addon (under programs) to delay the start of XBMC by 5 seconds to make sure it's not a boot timing issue before you dive deeper into troubleshooting.

I don't have an asound.conf anymore, only an asound.state (but removing that does not make any difference).

I wasn't expecting the additional delay to have any effect because even aplay -l doesn't reveal any more devices (and I run aplay -l after some more delay). Regardless, I tried the extra delay and found it didn't change anything (still no sound). I did set both audio device and passthrough device to spdif as you suggested (which I always did before as well).

Note that I never had the issue of not seeing my spdif device in xbmc: it always properly shows up, it just doesn't produce any sound.

Next step would be to run some aplay tests to prove whether the kernel side is working okay or not. If yes, the problem is within XBMC code. If no, it's something kernel side. It might be an idea to drop into the #openelec IRC support channel during EU hours and see if fritsch is around.. he's one of the developers with knowledge of how XBMC interacts with alsa.
