[SOLVED] Unable to boot OpenELEC 5.95.1 from USB - hughparker1 - 05-14-2015

I have installed OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-5.95.1 on USB stick using Win32DiskImager.

but when I try to boot my laptop from USB and press f12 to select boot option, I am able to select the USB drive, but it doesn't boot.

It's a DELL Inspiron 15 3543 (3000 Series)
5th Generation Intel Core i5-5200U Processor

which is quite new.

.. I have made the following changes in the BOOT setup .....

Dell Inc. Aptio Setup Utility - American Megatrends Inc.
(T) Boot
Boot List Option [Legacy] default was [UEFI]
Secure Boot [Disabled] default was [Enabled]

I have booted the USB successfully on my older laptop which has the legacy BIOS.
Has anyone experienced this before?

I appreciate my problem is not related to the OpenELEC software, but is caused by restrictions of the new UEFI boot software, but any help would be appreciated. Even pointing me in the right direction would be good.

Regards, Hugh

Try with UEFI enabled, OpenELEC is UEFI compatible I think.

Thanks nickr for you reply. I first tried to boot without any changes in boot menu, but couldn't see the USB to select after pressing F12 for boot options, then I disabled Secure Boot and still could not see USB to select. So finally I set the following changes in BOOT setup...

<code>Boot List Option [Legacy]
Secure Boot [Disabled]</code>

now when I boot up, the usual splash screen appears with following text msg in top left hand corner of screen...

<code>cp: read error: Input/output error
*** Error in prepare_sysroot: mount_common: Could not mount /dev/SYSTEM ***
### Starting debugging shell... type exit to quit ###
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
# _</code>

If I type "ls" then I can see files like ....

<code>etc lib sbin bin proc flash storage
splash init lib64 dev sys sysroot</code>

EDIT...
If I type "exit" at prompt, I get the following...

If I type "exit" at prompt, I get the following...

Code:
mount: mounting /flash on /sysroot/flash failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /flash on /sysroot/storage failed: No such file or directory

I don't have the knowledge to determine what this means or what I need to do to resolve the situation. If anyone knows how I can proceed I would be grateful.

regards, Hugh

Sometimes on 'normal' Intel/AMD motherboards, the FastBoot option needs to be disabled otherwise USB boots are not recognized. Perhaps this is something similar?

Thanks klojum for suggestion, I'll try that in boot setup and let you know

I made the change but I get the same text message as previously... my boot options are now....

Code:
Fast Boot [Disabled] default was [Enabled]
Boot List Option [Legacy] default was [UEFI]
Secure Boot [Disabled] default was [Enabled]

disable xhci (usb3 options) in bios. and pray your bios is not so buggy so later you can access it again

thanks seo, I might not try this in case I can't get access to my BIOS again.

What I think I'll do is try to install OpenELEC on the hard drive of the laptop itself. I have managed to do this on a previous laptop with Windows 7, Linux and OpenELEC. But I have hesitated to to it on my new laptop because of UEFI restrictions.

I have recently installed Linux Mint alongside Windows 8.1 on UEFI and it works really good. All I need to do now is add OpenELEC. I had previously created a post asking if anyone had any experience of this .....
http://openelec.tv/forum/66-multiboot/76792-can-i-add-openelec-to-dual-boot-system-with-uefi
... but have had now replies yet.

I will give it a go now and let you know how I get on.

Cheer, and thanks for all your help so far. Hugh

EDIT 15th MAY 2015 I managed to install OpenELEC on my laptop HDD so I don't need to use live USB. see updated link above for details.
