Kodi v5.95.4 build for AppleTV - chewitt - 08-24-2015

I have posted v5.95.4 for download a little ahead of other OE builds being released as I will be travelling when that happens. Please note there is no manual update file for this build due to packaging changes that require a revised partition layout on disk. Please read HERE for instructions on how to migrate an existing OpenELEC installation. You will like this update. If you have a CrystalHD card you will LOVE it.

Thanks chewitt this is great video playback seems much improved. I have a question about the PVR addons, I read on the news blog that as of Kodi 15.0 PVR addons and visualizations are no longer bundled with openelec but can be downloaded with the Kodi addon repo I assume your build is the same however when I went to install them they were not there. Is this an issue with openelec or something more specific to this build?

I suspect I know the reason for this. OE does not build i386 addons for v6.0 releases as there are no official i386 6.0 releases. Thus to see content in the unofficial OE repo I forced the addon version to match Helix (which has i386 content available). One of the unintended consequences (done in ignorance as I don't use PVR things) may be that this prevents Kodi from seeing things in the Isengard repo. I suspect it can't be solved in this build, but I'll have a think.

Hi,
Thanks Chewitt. Will this build run on the USB stick--that is, on an ATV1 with no hdd in it?

The installer has logic for that scenario. I didn't test it for several years but I think it should still work. Let me know Smile

After asking some questions they are (or will be) in the Kodi repo for Android, iOS, MacOS, Win etc. where one binary serves one (or a couple) of OS but not for Linux where there are many different distros. There is no i386 repo for OE 6.0 so I need to look at what's required to publish one, but this is "old dog new trick" territory and might take a while to figure out and then script something.

The unofficial repo will be partially the same. I have current tricked this into using the OE 4.x/5.x repo which is available for i386. Simple binary apps that never change will work but more complex apps like tvheadend that are frequently updated will be out of date. If it's complex to maintain those I will simply declare them off-limits. An AppleTV box is RAM and CPU starved so it's reasonable to declare it as a "media player" device and not something for people to run with a complex configuration and get good results.

I totally understand. I ended up solving my issue by downloading the vivid i386 kodi.pvr.wmc deb file from ubuntu then extracted the files I needed and manually installed the addon. It was a messy solution but got the job done. I'm very impressed with the performance of HD MPEG2 playback the CPU sits between 60 and 75 percent with occasional spikes up to 80 much less than Crystalbuntu2 running Helix 14.2.

Nice build indeed Chewitt. Thanks for still burning the flame.

Works really nicely on my 32GB mSATA SSD equipped ATV.
I think I've seen 155MB free at one stage, which is superb on a 256MB machine.

No issues to report, apart from the Addons and pvr stuff.
Good work Smile

I've seen 164MB at one point but it's all smoke and mirrors if you see how much swap is used Smile

For anyone who already installed the v5.95.4 build and is looking for Kodi addons: please download, unzip (leaving it as .tar) and then manually update with the following build (copy to /storage/.update and reboot) which uses http://chewitt.openelec.tv/addons as the base URL for official addons. I figured out how to recreate the repo: http://chewitt.openelec.tv/appletv/OpenELEC-ATV.i386-5.95.4.tar.gz

For new installs the installer images have been updated with the same change. I still didn't figure out how the unofficial repo is built, but that will come. NB: Unofficial contains several things that I have no intention of maintaining due to near-continuous upstream breakage, but the useful small stuff which is quite static should be no problem to include.
