How can i decrease the size of the openelec image? - Pelican - 05-20-2016

I would like to install openelec to an 512 MB sd card but all the image file is bigger than that. Inspecting the img file shows that it contains millions of zeros at the end. Unfortunately if I strip some to fit to the card then openelec gives an error message at start and freeze there.
Finally I managed to install it with berryboot (using Raspberry Pi 3) and now I'm trying to update it to the latest, but the update doesnt work. I've downloaded the tar file and copied it to the update folder but nothing happens at reboot. Tried to set update to auto and manual but nothing happens. Any idea what could be a solution?

You could compile your own and set SYSTEM_SIZE in distributions/OpenELEC/options. Updating will be difficult, because how is the update file going to fit on the SD card and also be extracted?
