So you fixed your problem then.
I bet for stereo audio your backs are just putting out the exact same signal as their corresponding fronts and the center just a mono mix of left and right, which I imagine some would argue is not a "correct" stereo image of a stereo mix but whatever.
FWIW I don't set my reciever to fake a surround mix for stereo music precisely because I think it sounds clearer, less muddy playing stereo music in 2.1, but its all a matter of taste. My former father-in-law hated letter boxing he said because he felt he was "missing part of the movie" even though as I pointed out by cropping the format he was quite literally missing part of the picture. There is no accounting for taste.
In terms of navigation sound its either supposed to be on through whatever playback is set to or not on at all. Why would that be a problem?
