Zotac Zbox AD02 - HDMI+Optical

Hi,

I recently found openelec and is now running devel-20120109010059-r9469 on a AD02.

I've got it up and running but I have some issues with remote and audio setup.

For now my biggest problem is audio. I would like to have audio through HDMI to my TV and optical to my receiver. The receiver is almost only used when listening to music, but of course I would like to have the option to switch it on when i'm watching movies

Is it possible to set up audio so that I get both analog HDMI and digital optical audio out at same time?

Hi, yes, that is possible with the asound.conf configuration.
Inside the configfiles/asound.conf_sample/ directory there is a file called asound.conf_xs35gt.... copy that to the configfiles directory, rename it to asound.conf and modify it with the device and cardnumbers according your box. Safe it, reboot. Inside xbmc, set audio and passthrough device to custom and type: pcm.both
It should work now.

I tried setting up asound.conf but then I got problem with audio in some movies, I don't know how to describe the sound in english but it did sound like it would kill my tv

I will try more tomorrow and post result.

Hello again!

I tried your suggestion and it worked, almost... I got sound in both HDMI and Optical but with some problems depending on format of media played.

Results with Audio Out set to HDMI or Optical/Coax

Receiver (optical): DTS/AC3 plays fine but no sound at all on AVI, MP3, FLAC
TV (HDMI): DTS/AC3 "garbage" sound, AVI, MP3, FLAC plays fine.

If I change Audio Out to Analog I don't get any sound on receiver but everything seems to play fine on HDMI.

I could live with no sound on receiver for some media formats (except MP3 & FLAC) but the garbage sound on HDMI is really annoying, and sounds not good at all.

Another thing I noticed was that with this setting it's not possible to change volume on DTS/AC3 movies in XBMC, nothing happens when pressing remote buttons. When playing other media it's working.

With this asound.conf everything seems to work so far. The settings I found different from asound.conf_xs35gt is "type softvol", "control.card 1", "rate 48000". I guess rate 48000 resample everything on HDMI but what does type softvol and control.card 1 do?

In XBMC Audio setup I have selected Analog, does this affect sound quality? With this settings I cannot check DTS and AC3, does this meen XBMC does not send DTS/AC3 to receiver?
