Okay, just to say I am a complete 'noob' to linux systems and would really appreciate if anyone can either direct me to a 'How-to' or 'Idiots-Guide' or even be patient enough to explain it to me via simple steps.

Basically, I have just built a HTPC running the Generic OpenElec 4.07 and I have installed in there a DVBSly T9580. I've not installed any drivers or firmware for the card and to be perfectly honest I am unsure if I am meant to and if so, which ones & how??? I would basically like to get my Freeview HD and Freesat channels running on the xmbc from the UK/London. On the Tvheadsend I can't see the card stated but I have the choice of one card (Montage DS3103/TS2022), which I tried to set up on Astra 28.2 but no services were picked up.

Can anyone please offer me a step-by-step guide on how to get this card to work with OpenELEC?

Today OE won't support the DVB-T2 tuner in the card. The DVB-S2 tuner should be ok though. The Montage chip you see in Tvheadend is the DVB frontend of your DVB-S2 tuner and that should be the one you should configure.

The driver I've written (that supports both T2 and S2) is not added to the Linux kernel yet. User CVH creates unofficial OE builds, not sure if he has full support for this card - but I'd guess so. Worth checking out.

I tried to install this card on ubuntu 14.04 from media_tree, but I received the following error:

so far I used the closed source driver from the vendors website, but after a kernel upgrade and a driver rebuild my other usb card (Afatek/ITE 9135 rev2) stopped working.
With open source media tree, the usb card is working, but the T9580 is not.

(I know it is an OE forum, but I found the latest information about the card here, sorry)

This has happened to me once too. You've got altera ci module in two places now:

cd /lib/modules/`uname -r`
find ./ | grep altera

If I remember correctly, it was the altera-ci.ko module, but please have a look around. Make sure you delete the older one. Maybe you had to move the newer one where the old one was or not, I can't really remember. Take backups and play around.

The card is working now with the driver, but I started to have problems occasionally. First, when I tried to open live tv in a remote xbmc machine (previously it was working ok), and later when I tried to watch tv on another machine with vlc. After this occurs, only a reboot helps.

Most of the time the card is working ok, but from time to time I still get these crashes.
Do you have any hint where to look, what logs to check?

It looks like a vb2 related crash. You're not running OpenELEC right? I'd post the (complete) dmesg logs and the description of your system on the linux-media mailing list and ask for help there. Have a look at http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-media@...ernel.org/ for the list.

Thanks, I'm not using OE indeed, but I think I found something relevant: [media] cx23885: use sg = sg_next(sg) instead of sg++

It seems that the patch is included in the current media_tree.

There is another importand patch in the sources now, this was the one that completely eliminated the bugs for me.
