Issue with DTS-HD passthrough

Since upgrading to OpenElec 3.2, I've observed an issue where movies with DTS-HD soundtracks do not play the audio track. The video stream proceeds fine. If I go and switch audio streams to DTS or something else, they work fine. If I switch stream back to DTS-HD, it will engage and play fine.

If I uncheck dts-hd capable receiver, DTS tracks start up fine on start of film.

What i found was that if I switch "Adjust Display refresh rate to match video" to off, the DTS-HD track will play fine. If I change the output refresh rate to 24p for xbmc, the dts-hd tracks play fine, so it's not a 24p issue. It seems almost like the HDMI handshake when xbmc attempts to switch from the gui refresh to 24p of the film doesn't work right since if I flip flop the audio streams while the movie is playing, DTS-HD will play.

Platform is a Intel Ivy Bridge i3-2330
Receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR875

I have temporarily defeated the issue by leaving on 60hz refresh, but really liked having auto adjust to get 24p out for films. Any help/ideas really appreciated.

Hello,

I am having a similar problem.

I have to cycle through the Audio outputs: HDMI to Coax to Analog and back to HDMI to get the stream to play through the amp.

Recently upgraded to the latest version.

Hardware is NUC Celeron via. HDMI to Onkyo NR515

I have the exact same problem. Not only on DTS-HD MA but with Dolby TrueHD as well..
(TrueHD 7.1 that is; TrueHD 5.1 does seem to play right away)
Didn't test with disabling the refresh-rate switch yet, but will try that as well.

Intel NUC I3

I have the same issue as the others. My setup:

Intel Celeron NUC
Onkyo TX-SR805

Seems the common denominator with all of us is Onkyo receiver and Intel GPU.

If I have auto refresh rate change, then if I have a lossy soundtrack in addition to the lossless HD track, I can switch tracks and back to the lossless HD track and it plays fine. If I only have a lossless HD track, I have to cycle through the audio output device and back to HDMI, then it works.

Anyone find a solution yet?

Well, I had reverted to Openelec 3.0.6 for the past few months since my first post as this issue didn't occur in that build, but seemed to after this. I just upgraded to 3.2.4 and the issue is still there in 3.2.4. What I have been able to determine a workaround that I'm hoping may point toward what the issue is: the HD audio stream not playing seems to be time-related to the last time a sound was generated by Openelec or playback.

Workaround
1. Shut off GUI sounds
2. If I wait at least 5 seconds between the last sound made by another movie and selecting a movie with HD audio, the HD audio stream will engage. If I wait only 4 seconds, the HD audio track won't play.

Can't really explain why, perhaps someone who knows how this works could explain. Was there some HDMI handshake delay put in after 3.0.6? All I know is that this issue does not exist in that version, so it appears it was a change to Openelec or the Intel audio driver it uses.

Any ideas anyone?

The XBMC Eden codebase is now dead from a development perspective and there are a vast number of changes to audioengine in the Gotham codebase; so update to a dev build and re-test. Also as a guess, have a play with the "stream silence" setting in Gotham as this (unsurprisingly) sends silence for a defined time period to keep the audio sink open instead of the default behaviour which is to close it; resulting in a loss of audio on some AVRs.
