Errors installing Generic.x86_64-5.0.2

I have installed the Generic.x86_64-5.0.2 on a 16gb Sansa blade memory stick from an install stick created on a Win 7 pc. The install was done on my Revo 3700 which is happily running ver 2 from the hard drive.

When booting from the stick, OpenElec halts at the splash screen with the following error message:-

***Error in prepare_sysroot:final check:could not find system***
##starting debugging shell...type exit to quit##
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

I have repeated the install with a fresh download of 5.0.2 on several new memory sticks, and each time the boot halts on the Openelec image with the error message.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Attach a keyboard and in the debugging shell run "ls -l /flash" and validate that the SYSTEM file is present and/or not zero bytes in size? .. if yes, copy files to another USB, mount the USB, remount /flash read-write (mount -o remount,rw /flash) and then copy the new SYSTEM file over. If not, no idea what the issue is :whistle:

Thank you Chewitt, I have tried what you suggested.

Typing 1s -1/flash at the command prompt returns
Sh: 1s: not found.

I noticed, as the the install sticks run through booting the Revo to the install menu, an error flashes up, too quick to read, I had to catch it on video.

I'm no great expert on the installer but the installer doesn't need user config directories so I wouldn't worry about the error. The location is /flash once the OS is booted but it might be /boot in the initramfs stages. Have a look there.

I've tried everything. The live version of OE runs perfectly. When I install from the image to another memory stick the boot up fails as before. KodiBuntu runs perfectly from a memory stick. Maybe it's something with the bios of the Revo and the original Limpus version of Linux that came preinstalled. I've given up trying to install to a memory stick and will try to update my version 2.0 on the hard drive.

I have SMB access and was wondering what the likely outcome would be if I did a manual update from version 2.0 to 4.2.1.? (I'm giving Kodi a miss for now).

Do I need to copy across the whole .tar package or just the 'system' and 'kernel' files?

Does the .tar package repartition and format or will it use the existing version 2.0 file structure?

Will remnants of version 2.0 remain on the hard drive that need removing?

Please just do a clean install. You will run into more issues than it's worth by upgrading from such an old version.
