Securing content of /storage

I have some personal data on the /storage directory. The device is also connected to Internet so want to make sure the data is secured and not accessible by others over the Internet.

Also, have mounted external HDD and SMB is enabled with Password. Not sure if this is secure enough?

Any suggestion or checklist which to make sure data is secured and not accessible over the internet?
